On July 25, 2000, an Air France Concorde jet struck a metal strip on the runway, causing its tire to explode. The explosion caused parts of the tire to puncture the fuel tank, and the subsequent leakage of jet fuel sparked a catastrophic fire. Investigators concluded that the metal part had fallen off a Continental Airlines DC-10 jet that had taken off minutes prior to the Concorde on the same runway.
