Knut the baby polar bear was born on December 5, 2006 and raised by zookeeper Thomas Dörflein. Knut quickly became one of the biggest stars the Berlin Zoo has ever had and was the center of a year-long media storm. Unfortunately, keeper Dörflein died unexpectedly of a heart attack at the end of September this year.
