Bosnia-Herzegovina was recognized as an independent country by the US and the European Union in April 1992. Shortly thereafter, a civil war erupted in which 100,000 people died. Karadzic was president of the Republika Srpska, that Serbian Republic established in response to the declaration of independence of Bosnia-Herzegovina. He is accused of having been directly involved in much of the violence that resulted.
