Poland was the pioneer when it came to challenging the grip of the communist state. The trade union Solidarnosc had led strikes throughout the 1980s. And in January 1989, the communist regime sat down with its detractors at this round table -- which lent the talks its name. Solidarnosc leader Lech Walesa led the opposition at the talks.
