Supermarkets and discount stores forced over 20,000 small-town stores to close in Germany over the last 10 years. For the 12.3 million Germans living in villages and rural areas, that was bad news. Elderly people felt stranded, and young people got annoyed at having to get into their cars to buy the smallest thing.
