The post-World War II relationship between Germany and France began on Jan. 22, 1963 with the signing of a friendship treaty in the Elysée Palace. On hand were German Chancellor Konrad Adenauer and French President Charles de Gaulle. The treaty provided the foundation for reconciliation between the two nations, which had been at odds since the Franco-German War of 1870-1871 -- and had been through two devastating world wars.
