Direct descendants of Homo erectus may have survived until around 100,000 years ago in Indonesia. But evidence of an erect hominin distinct from Neanderthals and modern humans as recently as 30,000 years ago -- the rough age of the Denisova Cave individual -- were unknown on mainland Asia.
