German native Joseph Ratzinger was elected pope in 2005 after the death of his Polish predecessor, John Paul II. The 85-year-old pope has always been more of an academic than an administrator. "As pope, this veteran curial insider has turned out to have virtually zero interest in actually running the Roman Curia," writes John L. Allen, a biographer of the pope, referring to the Vatican's administrative and judicial apparatus.
