Konrad Adenauer, the West German Chancellor, visited West Berlin on August 22, 1961, shortly after the construction of the Wall began on Aug. 13. Secret documents seen by SPIEGEL show that Adenauer pushed the US to suggest leaving West Berlin to the Soviets in exchange for parts of East Germany.
