This graph shows trends in asylum applications to Germany since 1953. In the 1990s, the number of asylum seekers was particularly high. The number climbed from 55,000 people in 1985 to 256,000 in 1991. In 1993, Germany's asylum law was revised, requiring anyone who first entered Europe through a "safe third country" to return there in order to apply for refugee status.
