The Emmaus Church in Heuersdorf, a small town in eastern Germany near Leipzig, was moved 12 kilometers (7.5 miles) beginning in October 2007 in order to save it. The entire town was abandoned in order to allow a nearby lignite, or brown coal, mine to expand.
