Axel Weber: The president of the German Central Bank had long been seen as the frontrunner to succeed Jean-Claude Trichet as the head of the European Central Bank. He had the support of Chancellor Angela Merkel and was seen as strong enough to stand up for the independence of the ECB. But his insistent criticism of the ECB's decision to buy up state bonds from indebted countries such as Greece did not endeared him to the French. On Wednesdy, press reports indicated that he was no longer interested in the position and he is now seen as out of the running.
