While all are agreed Germany organized a fantastic World Cup, it has been suggested that some of the play on the pitch was decidedly average: Where were the young stars, the wonder goals, the pulsating, heart-stopping games? But such cynicism can go too far. It's as if people have forgotten Philipp Lahm's pin-point strike for Germany in the opening game against Costa Rica or Argentina's extra-time victory over Mexico. And, if hard-fought, titanic clashes are your thing, who could forget Holland versus Portugal when almost every player went into the referees book?
The World Cup also had its fair share of bizarre moments: Ivan Kaviedes of Ecuador wore a spiderman mask to celebrate a goal, while Diego Maradonna provided plenty of entertainment bouncing up and down in the stands. There were scenes of jubilation and of bitter defeat: a series of penalty shoot-outs offered tension in abundance, including Germany's emotional victory over Argentina.
Then there were the surprise success stories, Ghana's stunning victory against the Czech Republic and France's unstoppable run to the World Cup final itself. And, speaking of which, though the final was short on goals, Zinidine Zidane's headbutt and ensuing red card will be discussed for years to come.
There was no shortage of drama and memorable moments, as SPIEGEL ONLINE'S World Cup photo gallery should convince you...
