It is not easy to get huge ships from the Meyer Werft shipyards in the Lower Saxony town of Papenburg to the North Sea -- though not quite as difficult as this image makes it seem. The Celebrity Equinox made its way carefully down the Ems River on Saturday following the 500 million cruise ship's completion. The route, past farms and through fields, is not without its detractors. Environmental groups say that flooding the river to make way for the ocean-going giants produced by the shipyards is harmful to the birds and other wildlife that make the river shores their home. The river level was raised by 220 centimeters (over 7 feet) to make way for the Celebrity Equinox.
