As part of the annual Saint Anthony purification ceremony in the village of San Bartolome de Pinares near Avilla, Spain, a man must ride his horse through the flames. According to the tradition, revellers ride their horses through bonfires placed around the village to purify the animals with fire and smoke after receiving a blessing from a priest. The ritual is carried out on the evening before Jan. 17, Saint Anthony's day.
