Scaffolding surrounds the "Christ the Redeemer" statue in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in preparation for its cleaning. The 38-meter- (125-foot-) tall Art Deco statue was inaugurated on Oct. 13, 1931 on Corcovado hill overlooking the city, which climbs 709 meters (2,325 feet) above sea level. The concrete and soapstone statue has become a symbol for the city and Brazil.
