Sept. 1 is officially the "Day of Knowledge" in Ukraine, where students at all levels celebrate in a festival that launches with the ringing of the school bell. It's a formal, flower-filled affair. For these Kiev kids returning to school and starting first grade, the warm and carefree days of summer are a thing of the past. Are they exhausted from a day of festivities, or dreading a year of multiplication tables?
