S is for Stern radio: Any self-respecting East German kid who got money from their relatives at their coming of age party set out immediately to the nearest store to purchase a Stern Radio Recorder R 160, produced by the VEB Stern Radio Berlin and sold at a hefty price of 800 East German marks. The radio not only enabled East German kids to listen to West German radio -- they could also record it. Illegal? Who cared?
