Fire officials in protective suits respond on Tuesday to a chemical accident at the Kraft foods facility in Bad Fallingbostel in the German state of Lower Saxony. Some 1,400 people were evacuated on Monday afternoon after substantial quantities of nitric acid and sodium hydroxide were accidentally mixed. Together, the compounds can create a poisonous gas. Residents were allowed to return home late Tuesday after the tank containing the mixture was successfully emptied.
