Central Damascus had long been relatively sheltered from the violence that has gripped Syria for the last two years. But on Thursday, a massive car bomb exploded in the city center, killing 53 people, according to state media. The blast occurred near offices of the ruling Baath Party, but most of those killed in the Thursday attack were civilians, including several children. It is unclear who was behind the bomb.
