Pope Benedict XVI lifts off from the Vatican at just after 5:00 p.m. as scheduled on Thursday, heading for Castel Gandolfo. The short flight ended his papacy and marks the first time a pope has voluntarily stepped down in over 600 years. Upon arrival at the papal summer residence, he told a crowd that "I am simply a pilgrim who is ending his path on this earth."
