A cow herder in southern Sudan has painted his face with ash from burned cow dung. The manure is burned in the evenings to repel mosquitoes and cow keepers paint themselves every morning during the ritualistic cleaning of the cows. Southern Sudan remains a violent place and cows are a frequent target for theft. On April 22, this cow herder and his companions managed to prevent an attack on their herd.
