Resisting Arrest Runaway Emu Shreds Policeman's Trousers

Police in western Germany had a tricky case on Saturday night when they were called to apprehend an escaped emu. The big bird didn't come quietly.

An emu who escaped from an animal park tore up a policeman's trousers while resisting arrest in western Germany, police said.

The big bird had run off from a privately owned park in the town of Kaarst and residents called police after seeing it trot down a street on Saturday night.

Emus can reach speeds of up to 50 kilometers per hour, but this one made no attempt to run away when two police officers arrived in a squad car. "We didn't have to chase it. But one of our officers had his trousers shredded by the emu's claws when he grabbed it," said a spokesman for the police in Neuss near Kaarst.

Luckily, they didn't have to bundle the bird into the squad car either. "The park was very close by and we walked him back there."
