Several European countries were hit by heavy storms with wind speeds of over 70 mph (110 km/h) on Thursday night. Coastal areas in northern Germany, Great Britain, Ireland and France were particularly affected and up to nine people have died in Europe's stormy seas already.
Coastal workers are now working to rescue drifting ships and find missing fishermen. Sea transport between France and the UK was heavily disrupted when the English port of Dover was closed temporarily.
The stormy winds also wreaked destruction inland. Trucks and cars travelling on motorways in Belgium and Germany were blown over. One passenger was killed in Brussels while several other people were injured.
Streets in Germany were blocked by fallen trees and parts of buildings which had been blown off. Tens of thousands of people in southern Germany, north-east Poland and Wales suffered power outages.
Meteorologists now predict the aftermath of the storm. The German port city of Hamburg is bracing itself for a storm tide that is expected to flood parts of its historic fishmarket.
