Romantic Marriage Proposal Sparks UFO Scare

Concerned residents in Bavaria, called police after spotting UFOs. But the strange lights in the night sky turned out to be nothing more than a quirky marriage proposal.

The quirky marriage proposal worked: the young couple will tie the knot this or next year.

Police in Lower Bavaria received several phone calls on Wednesday evening from anxious locals who had spotted strange lights drifting across the night sky above the sleepy town of Plattling. But when a police patrol arrived at the banks of the river Isar they discovered -- instead of green men -- a young couple.

The 29-year-old man had just proposed to his 27-year-old girlfriend. To make the occasion extra romantic, he had released 50 paper lanterns that glowed in the night sky, the AP reported.

According to a police statement issued Thursday, the groom-to-be had thought of everything in advance, even getting clearance from the national aviation authority.

And after all that effort his girlfriend luckily said yes. The couple now intends to tie the knot in the fall or at latest next spring.
