A newly-retired pensioner from the city of Aschaffenburg in the German state of Bavaria surprised passers-by and police on Wednesday when he began handing out one euro coins to strangers. The day after his retirement, the man put on a suit and took up a post on a busy shopping street with a sign around his neck that read: "Not unemployed or homeless. Have a wife. I'm ok. That's why I'd like to give you a euro."
An incredulous bystander suspected a scam and alerted the police. On arrival at the scene, baffled police officers heard how the pensioner had just wanted to celebrate his retirement by giving some joy, in the form of euro coins, to his fellow citizens. According to the police statement, "because it is not illegal to give money away, the officers allowed the newly retired pensioner to continue."
