A Picture and its Story: Surfing through St. Mark's Square

When Venice flooded earlier this month, a thousand honeymoons were ruined. But for one intrepid wakeboarder from the Netherlands, the flooding wasn't a disappointment -- it was the chance of a lifetime.

Duncun Zuur had a dream. A dream both simple, beautiful -- and exceptionally difficult to pull off. The 34-year-old Dutch wakeboarding champion had always dreamed of surfing through the piazzas of Venice after a big flood. On Dec. 2, 2008, after the worst sea surge in 20 years, Duncan Zuur finally got his chance. Zuur shared his moment in this week's issue with SPIEGEL. Click on the photo gallery to begin.
