Russian Defense Minister Anatoly Serdyukov discusses relations between his country and NATO, possible collaboration in the development of a missile defense system in Europe and resistance to the Kremlin's military reforms by the Russian officers' corps.

Serdyukov paid a visit to the Pentagon, outside Washington DC, in September. "All armies must adjust to the actual threat situation and to new challenges from time to time," he says. "We assume that the threats to Russia today are minimal."

The defeat of Nazi Germany is still a major anniversary in Russia. A military parade on May 9, 2010, celebrated the Allied victory. Now, though, the Kremlin can imagine buying weapons from Berlin. "We are working with the German defense ministry and German industry," says Serdyukov. "We are in negotiations."
