This soil sample from the Playa Grande lagoon in Puerto Rico tells part of the history of hurricanes in the northern Atlantic. Whenever a hurricane with a speed of more than 211 kilometers an hour (131 mph) hit the coast, sand from the land spit was deposited in the soil. The grainy sand layers can be seen clearly in the soil sample shown.
