UPDATE 01-08-2020: We had to shut down this app, because we relaunched our website and all connected services. We thank you for supporting DER SPIEGEL in English. If you would like to continue reading DER SPIEGEL, you will find our journalism in English for free here on our website. If you purchased a subscription that is valid for longer than January 8th 2020 you will be reimbursed through the App Store.
DER SPIEGEL, Europe's largest newsmagazine, provides an important voice in affairs on the continent and around the world. The DER SPIEGEL in English app features a daily mix on Mondays through Fridays of our award-winning journalism, with stories covering European, German and global issues that have been tailored to international readers in and outside of Germany.
After completing a simple, in-app subscription purchase process (which is explained in detail in the FAQ below), you can look forward to access to the following features:
Virtually our full line-up of stories from DER SPIEGEL in English's World, Europe, Germany, Business and Zeitgeist sections.
Reports from DER SPIEGEL and SPIEGEL ONLINE correspondents across Germany and in 20 international bureaus in Europe and around the world
Image galleries with eye-catching photography selected by our staff of photo editors
Mobile access to our full archive using the app's search function
The ability to share any article you are reading with one simple click by email or to Facebook or Twitter.
The app provides virtually all of the recent content available on the SPIEGEL ONLINE International site, including a great daily editorial line-up of stories from our World, Europe, Germany, Business and Zeitgeist sections. In addition to the usual features -- including fresh stories daily from the weekly edition of DER SPIEGEL, daily news and analysis from SPIEGEL ONLINE and original features from the staff of SPIEGEL ONLINE International -- the DER SPIEGEL in English app also provides users with the ability to download stories for offline reading, even when you do not have access to WiFi or your mobile network.
How do I get the DER SPIEGEL in English iPhone application?
You can get the DER SPIEGEL in English application for free from the iTunes App Store on your iPhone or iPod Touch. You can also download it to your computer through the App Store in iTunes.
What Apple devices can the app run on?
The DER SPIEGEL in English application is compatible with Apple's iPhone and iPod Touch devices with operating system (IOS) 4.2 or greater. Although it works perfectly well on the iPad, it has not been optimized for use on the device.
How much does it cost?
The DER SPIEGEL in English app is available for download free of charge. The app allows you to view headlines and stories, but full access to articles requires the purchase of a subscription. Subscription prices are set on a country-by-country basis by the iTunes App Store, but the standard price for six months in the United States is $3.99 and €2.99 in Europe. The purchase of a subscription is also the most effective way currently available for showing your support for the high-quality journalism produced by DER SPIEGEL in English and helping us to recoup the costs associated with producing a world-class media product from Germany that would not otherwise be available to a non-German-speaking audience.
How do I purchase a subscription?
Subscriptions to DER SPIEGEL in English are purchased within the app itself. To activate the subscription process, please click on any article within the app. It will then direct you to the iTunes App Store, where you can complete the transaction using your iTunes account. Please note that DER SPIEGEL in English uses the iTunes App Store's auto-renewable subscription feature. Your subscription will automatically renew unless auto-renew is turned off at least 24 hours prior to the end of the current period. Your account will be charged for renewal within 24 hours prior to the end of the current period.
How can I turn off auto-renew on my subscription?
You can manage your subscription via your iTunes account and the auto-renewal feature can be turned off by going to Account Settings after you have purchased the subscription. For instructions on turning off the auto-renewal feature, please visit this page at the iTunes Store.
Can I use my subscription on a different device than the one for which I have purchased it?
Yes. If you use more than one iPhone or iPod Touch, you can still access your subscription, provided it is still valid. Simply download the app from the iTunes App Store on the additional device with which you would like to use the DER SPIEGEL in English app. When you run the device and click on a headline, you will be prompted with the following message: "This subscription has been purchased on another device." It will then give you the option of connecting to the iTunes App Store, at which point you will be asked to provide the login and password for your iTunes account. If this information is provided correctly and you still have a valid subscription to DER SPIEGEL in English, that purchase will then be activated on the new device at no additional fee.
Can I read DER SPIEGEL stories if I don't have mobile coverage or a WiFi connection?
The app's exclusive Pack&Go feature allows you to simply download articles and read them offline later, even if you have no access to WiFi or your mobile network.
Whether you are sailing the Baltic Sea from Germany to Scandinavia or riding the New York subway from Uptown to Downtown, you will still have access to any articles that you have downloaded using the Pack&Go feature. Please note that the actual Pack&Go downloading process does require an active WiFi or mobile network connection.
To take advantage of Pack&Go, open an article and click on the Pack&Go button located at the bottom of the screen. Then select "Save article" from the menu. As articles are downloading, a graphic depicting a red circle with a numeral inside will be visible on the Pack&Go button. When this circle disappears, it indicates the article has been successfully downloaded.
To view your list of downloaded articles, you can push the Pack&Go buton at any time and select "Show list". To delete stories once you have finished reading them, press the "Edit" button on the upper right corner of the screen on your Pack&Go story list. A minus sign will be displayed next to each saved article enabling you to delete it.
How do I email or share an article?
You can share any article featured in the DER SPIEGEL in English app by clicking on the "Share" button on the lower right-hand side of the screen. You will then be given the option of sharing an article on Facebook, Twitter or by email. In addition, the "Feedback" button allows you to send any questions or input directly to the developers of the DER SPIEGEL in English app.
How do I perform a search?
You can use our search engine to find most stories published in English by DER SPIEGEL and SPIEGEL ONLINE dating back to our English-language launch in October 2004. To search articles, click on the search icon in the upper right corner of the screen. The search feature is visible from the home page, all section pages and also within the articles. Once you click on the search icon, you will be provided with a field where you can enter the keywords for your search.
How does the DER SPIEGEL in English application differ from the SPIEGEL ONLINE International mobile site?
The DER SPIEGEL in English application differs significantly from SPIEGEL ONLINE International's mobile site in three ways. First, the app's Pack&Go feature permits you to download articles and read them offline, even when you have no access to WiFi or your mobile network.
In addition to Pack&Go, the current DER SPIEGEL in English premium application is also free of any paid commercial advertising.
The app is also designed to take advantage of the navigation and special features offered by IOS.
Can I access German-language content on the DER SPIEGEL in English app?
The DER SPIEGEL in English app does not provide access to German-language content. However, you can access that content through two additional apps that have been developed by DER SPIEGEL and by SPIEGEL ONLINE.
Like DER SPIEGEL in English, the DER SPIEGEL app can be downloaded free of charge from the iTunes App Store. Access to the weekly digital issue of the magazine must either be purchased through a subscription or through single issue sales. You can find out additional information about subscription plans and single purchases by visiting the SPIEGEL digital information page or by going directly to the iTunes App Store.
SPIEGEL ONLINE also offers an iPhone app that is free of charge and provides access to virtually all the journalism published on the site each day. You can find out more information about the app (in English) or you can visit the iTunes App Store directly. The app does not provide access to SPIEGEL's premium English-language content.
Why can I no longer access English content in the German-language SPIEGEL ONLINE iPhone app?
Because the DER SPIEGEL in English app is a premium product, access to English-language SPIEGEL content is not supported in the current release of the SPIEGEL ONLINE application.
Why can't I read the German versions of DER SPIEGEL articles which have been translated into English?
Like the DER SPIEGEL in English iPhone app, content from DER SPIEGEL magazine is also only available as a paid premium product. Content from current issues is not provided free of charge online and access to it requires a digital or print subscription to the magazine.
How can I send in feedback or questions about the app?
You can send questions or feedback regarding the DER SPIEGEL in English app at any time by clicking on the "Share" button on the lower right-hand side of the screen and then selecting "Feedback." You can also send us an email directly using your email software or webmail to firstname.lastname@example.org.
Thank you for helping to support the quality journalism at SPIEGEL by subscribing to our DER SPIEGEL in English application. We hope you enjoy the experience.
