An 81-year-old German lady driving an electric wheelchair took a wrong turn and ended up on a motorway where she travelled at 3.75 miles per hour along the hard shoulder in the direction of oncoming traffic.
Police in the southern city of Nuremberg said the pensioner had been trying to get to a cemetery, got lost and unwittingly opted for a short cut via the Autobahn. German motorways are famous for having no speed limits on many stretches.
A passing motorist stopped her and called the police who took her home. "The lady was given a lecture and the tongue-in-cheek warning that her vehicle needed to be capable of a speed of 60 km/h (37.5 miles per hour) to qualify for motorway travel," police said in a statement.
